Orebic is situated at the north coast of the peninsula Peljeac. The region of Orebic with its villages Viganj, Loviste, Juciste, Trestenik and Orebic itself had been the home of seafarers for ages. The tradition of navigation and ocean shipping had its time of prosperity in the 19th century when these villages represented the second strongest navigation military base at the Adriatic East cost with a total of approximately 60 big sailing ships. Nowadays this region is one of the most popular tourist destinations. With its luxuriant vegetation, the crystal-clear sea, the rich catering trade, the world-famous wines such as Dingac and Postup and its warm-hearted and hospitable inhabitants this area offers everything for an unforgettable holiday. Orebic is situated in the southwestern part of the peninsula Peljeac at the foot of the mountain St. Ilija (961 m). Orebic is the town of captains and seafarer. Its rich tradition of navigation can be seen in the local museum of navigation. On the nearby hill there is a Franciscan monastery from the year 1470 with a wealth museum situated. From there the visitor has an extraordinary outlook on the unique landscape. The hundred years old pines and cypress, olives, agaves, wonderful flowers, a very long period of sunshine and an unspoilt nature are other characteristics of Orebic. Furthermore the city offers long sandy beaches, small inlets and a crystal-clear sea for tourists who are looking for the beauty of nature and recreation. |
